Suspected drink driver turns out to be elderly couple from Knaresborough who had been on the road for 15 hours

Concerned motorists who called police about a suspected drink driver had actually spotted a confused elderly couple who had become lost while driving from Knaresborough to Thirsk.

Despite the short distance from their home to a caravan dealership they were attempting to visit, the couple, in their 90s, spent 15 hours driving around.

North Yorkshire Police have now released details of the bizarre 'chase' that began when drivers complained the couple were doing less than 20mph on an A road.

The car was reported to be 'all over' the A168 at around 5am on Monday morning.

The driver and passenger, aged 96 and 90, told officers who pulled them over that they had set off from their home in Knaresborough on Sunday afternoon to go and look at caravans at a dealership in Thirsk they had visited before.

The 20-mile journey should have taken 40 minutes, but they were still driving around 15 hours later and never reached Thirsk.

They were described as 'lost and confused', and had been seen driving along a glass verge.

They were finally stopped at a roundabout near the Roecliffe industrial estate.

Police took them home and advised them to surrender their licenses.
