Teenage mother’s former lover pleads guilty to her murder

The former lover of a teenage mother accused of stabbing her repeatedly before dumping her body in a canal pleaded guilty to her murder yesterday.

Student Laura Wilson, 17, who had a brief fling with married near neighbour Ishaq Hussain, 22, and gave birth to their daughter in June last year, was killed just days after telling his family of the affair.

Sheffield Crown Court heard she previously had a relationship with Hussain’s 18-year-old friend Ashtiaq Asghar, her first love, and wanted to have his children.

Asghar lured Laura to her death while Hussain allegedly provided a decoy to ensure she was alone, the court was told.

Asghar and Hussain, both from Holmes, Rotherham, have both been on trial charged with murdering Laura. After the prosecution closed its case, Asghar changed his plea to guilty.

Hussain, who denies murder, is still on trial.

The court has heard Hussain failed to acknowledge Laura’s child as his own and did not offer any support and Asghar was equally keen his family did not know about his affair with a white girl.

Hussain allegedly told friends that Laura was a “tramp” and said “I hope the little sprog dies” and that “they should both die”.

Fed up of all the secrecy, three days before her death an upset Laura went to tell the families of both Hussain and Asghar of her affairs with the men.

Afterwards Hussain and Asghar sent a flurry of texts to one another.

They adopted the language of the cult British film about Islamic terrorists Four Lions and mounted a “mission to kill Laura Wilson”, said prosecutor Nicholas Campbell QC.

He later told a friend Laura and her friends had brought trouble to his door and he was “very angry”.

Asghar sent texts to the friend using words to the effect of “I’m going to kill Laura”, said Mr Campbell. “She was a loose cannon and they had to get rid of her,” he said.

The teenager went missing from her home in October last year and her body was found two days later in the Sheffield Canal, near Meadowhall.

Mr Campbell told the jury: “The two defendants are jointly responsible for her murder.”

The court heard that Laura’s elder sister Sarah had looked upon Hussain as being “like a brother” to her in the area where they grew up.

Before the affair with Hussain, Laura had fallen in love with Asghar and they had a relationship. They resumed the affair after Laura had the baby with Hussain.

The case continues.
