“Healthcare staff attempted resuscitation and paramedics were called but he was pronounced dead at an outside hospital at approximately 8.55am.

“As with all deaths in custody, the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman will conduct an investigation.”

It comes after a teenage robber who was on suicide watch in prison died three days after being found hanging in her cell.

Mahry Rosser, 19, was serving three years in New Hall prison in Wakefield, West Yorkshire, for a robbery in Swansea in November 2009.

Rosser, who was also facing outstanding charges for arson while in custody, was found hanged in her cell on Thursday evening and taken to hospital, but died on Sunday afternoon.
