Teenager who stabbed grandparents will serve 17 years in jail

A TEENAGER who stabbed his grandmother to death while high on drugs will serve at least 17 years behind bars.

Lewis Dale, who also seriously injured his grandfather as they lay in bed at their home in Hull, was handed a life sentence yesterday at Hull Crown Court.

His father David Dale had written to Judge Jeremy Richardson QC asking for leniency. He said afterwards: “It is absolutely horrendous. I feel physically sick and I can’t believe it. I am just so sad.”

Dale, 17, had denied murder, claiming he was in a drug-induced psychosis after using the former legal high mephedrone, also known as M-Cat. But a jury rejected his claims and found him guilty of murder and attempted murder.

He attacked Irene Dale, 78, and Allan Dale, 80, who had been married for more than 50 years,
with a kitchen knife at their
home in Summergangs Road, east Hull.

After the stabbings he exchanged their TV for more drugs. According to his father David, the death of Lewis’s mother when he was 11 badly affected the youngster who began getting in trouble at school, later trying M-Cat.

InspMartin Daley said: “The judge has quite rightly given a substantial minimum sentence to Lewis Dale. The last year has been a very difficult time for the Dale family. Hopefully this will now draw a line under the matter and they can start to move forward and rebuild their lives.”

North Hull MP Diana Johnson said the case showed “we cannot afford irresponsible mixed messages” on legal highs, following suggestions by a Minister last week that shops could be licensed to sell legal highs to the over-18s.
