Both youngsters received treatment at the scene but were pronounced dead a short time later.

The woman arrested over the incident is aged 24.

Police said they were not currently looking for anyone else in connection with the investigation.

A spokesman said: “A post mortem examination will be taking place later and we are speaking with family members to establish the circumstances of what appears to be a very tragic case.”

The building where the children were found is a shared two-storey accommodation block at the end of a cul-de-sac.

It was cordoned off with police tape today, with police transit vans visible behind a cordon.

Neighbours spoke of their shock at hearing of the tragedy.

Betty Close said: “It is awful what has happened to those two little kiddies and it must be awful for the parents. I’ve lived round here for 12 years and there has never been any trouble. It is a nice quiet area.”

Carol Roy said: “It is really quiet around here and it is mainly older people who live in the area, but we are all shocked by what happened.

“It is a horrible thing to happen, especially when you find out it’s little ones. I’ve got a one-year-old granddaughter so it brings it home. Anything to do with children is horrible.”

John Addleye, who has lived in the area for 10 years, said: “I’m really shocked - this is a good neighbourhood, this street is one of the best in the area.”
