Updated: Woman subjected to serious sexual assault in Hull cemetery

The victim, who attended Hull Royal Infirmary with face and head injuries, was on her way to work when she was attacked in the Bankside area of the city between 4am and 5am yesterday.

She is being supported by specialist officers from Humberside Police.

Police said a number of people have already contacted them with information about the attack, but they are keen to hear from anyone else who might have been in the area at the time.

The woman was walking along Bankside in Hull when she was approached by an unknown man, who assaulted her and forced her into the nearby Air Street cemetery where the assault took place.

Detective Chief Inspector Tony Cockerill, who is leading the investigation, said: “A number of people have come forward with information and we are including those details among numerous other lines of enquiry we are pursuing.

“A team of specialist detectives have worked continuously gathering evidence since the incident happened and extensive enquiries will remain underway as long as required.”

Det Insp Cockerill said the victim was able to provide a description of her attacker, who was a white man between 35 and 40 years of age, around 6ft tall and of muscular build.

He added: “She has told us that the man spoke in English and was not known to her. The victim further described the attacker as having short brown hair and wore mainly dark clothing with some lighter colour featuring in a long sleeved zip up top, and a baseball cap with a logo on the front.

“We offer our assurance to the victim and the community that we are working hard to find out who is responsible for this attack. The public has already supported this enquiry and it is important that they continue to assist us to bring the person responsible to justice.

“We appreciate that when something like this happens it can trigger fear and apprehension amongst local people. We would ask that they keep in mind that incidents of this nature are rare and trust that we are exploring every opportunity to bring this investigation to a swift conclusion.”
