South Yorkshire Police has confirmed that Wayne Milnthorpe, 46, from Barnsley, was pronounced dead at the scene of the incident, which happened northbound between junctions 35 and 35A near Chapeltown today at around 1.40am.

It is believed that Mr Milnthorpe lost control of the black Ford Fiesta he was driving and collided with the nearside barrier.

The car then came to a stop in the first lane of the motorway, when it was hit by a white Iveco large goods vehicle (LGV).

The M1 was closed for several hours while officers investigated the incident.

Mr Milnthorpe’s family has been informed of his death and are now receiving support from family liaison officers. The driver of the LGV did not suffer any injuries.

Inspector Steve Askham said: “We believe there are a number of potential witnesses to this tragic incident and we are very keen to speak with them.

“CCTV footage shows a number of vehicles on the motorway around the time of the incident, who are very likely to have witnessed either the first collision, or the second one involving the LGV, and I would encourage them to please come forward with any information.”

Anyone who witnessed either collision is urged to call police on 101, quoting log 71 of July 12 2016.
