Video: Eight-hour Leeds stand-off brought to a peaceful conclusion by police

The 35-year-old man was yesterday being questioned on suspicion of a range of offences, including assault, possession of offensive weapons and threatening behaviour following the incident on Victoria Park Grove in Bramley.

Police were initially called shortly before 4am following reports of a domestic incident and concerns for the welfare of a man who had barricaded himself inside the semi-detached property.

Reinforcements, including armed officers, were summoned amid concerns that there was a threat to the safety of police and the public.

It is understood that a woman and two children were released from the property and taken to safety while the man remained inside.

One neighbour described hearing shouting shortly before the incident.

Police asked to check the attic space of an adjoining property to ensure there was no access between the two homes.

Ambulance staff and firefighters were also called to the scene and neighbours were told to remain indoors as a police negotiator tried to talk the man out of the house.

The road was cordoned off at the junction with Raynville Road and crowds gathered at the edge of the cordon to watch the drama unfold as dawn broke.

One witness said: “We got moved further and further back. There must have been 16 police cars here at one point as well as ambulances and fire engines.

“Things were being thrown out of the window – clothes, furniture, drawers. It was mad.”

After around eight hours of talks, the incident was brought to a peaceful conclusion at about noon when a man was led from the property in handcuffs.

Chief Inspector Chris Bowen, who oversaw the operation, said: “An operation was put in place to ensure the man’s safe removal from the property and our

colleagues from the fire and

ambulance services were on stand-by at the scene.

“A police negotiator was in contact with the man for a number of hours and shortly before noon he surrendered himself to officers who had entered the downstairs of the property.

“We appreciate that this incident will have caused concern and some disruption in the community today and we would like to thank everyone for their patience while this incident was brought to a safe conclusion.”

Repairs were being carried out to the property immediately after the incident, which left upstairs windows broken

and debris strewn across the front garden.
