Video: Man held after armed siege in Sheffield city centre

A MAN has been arrested after a three-hour armed siege in Sheffield.

Shortly after midday, officers entered the property on High Street Lane, just off Park Square roundabout, and led one man out.

Police have confirmed he has been arrested on suspicion of assisting offenders.

Around eight officers wearing helmets and body armour and at least four with guns surrounded the property.

A police spokesman said: “A man has been arrested in High Street Lane, Sheffield, following negotiations with him this morning.

“Officers arrived at the address at 9.10am this morning to arrest the man.

“Some neighbours were moved out as a precaution while police negotiated with him.

“The 26-year-old Sheffield man has been arrested on suspicion of assisting offenders and is in police custody.

“A team of officers were at the scene to ensure a peaceful and safe conclusion. No one was injured during the incident.

“Police are grateful for the support they have received from local residents and those that work in the area for their patience.”

Officers had guns trained on the house during the siege.

One neighbour said: “I saw a woman whose house it is roll up in a red car and speak to police.

“I think it’s the son who’s in there. The woman whose house it is was out she’s gone now.”

Another neighbour said: “Police have been stopping cars and have cordoned off footpaths onto Crown Place. It looks pretty serious.”

Crown Place and the bottom part of Duke Street were sealed off by police and closed to traffic.
