The baby-faced defendant, from Bradford, appeared in court via video-link, wearing a grey jumper and tracksuit bottoms.

He spoke with an English accent to confirm his name during the short preliminary hearing and has not yet entered any pleas to the charge.

Judge Mr Justice Saunders said: “Obviously if there is going to be a trial, we need to get it heard as quickly as possible because of his age.”

The boy is due to stand trial before a High Court judge at a crown court in either Leeds or Bradford on January 10, and it is scheduled to last four weeks.

He was remanded in custody and is due to appear in court on November 18 for a plea hearing.
