York man charged with attempted murder of girlfriend

Police have charged a man in York with trying to murder his girlfriend.

Michael Bennison, 28, was arrested at the weekend after police issued appeals to find him.

His 27-year-old girlfriend was stabbed in the city on Friday afternoon. She was taken to hospital for treatment to multiple wounds, including a punctured lung. She was later discharged.

Bennison has been charged with one count of attempted murder and one count of possessing an offensive weapon. He is appearing at York Magistrates’ Court today.

A 29-year-old local woman who was arrested at the same address as Bennison on Sunday on suspicion of assisting an offender has been released on police bail.
