Yorkshire ‘hacker’ held in FBI probe

A SUSPECTED computer hacker has been arrested in Yorkshire as part of an investigation by the FBI into a cyber-attack on the Facebook website, the Yorkshire Post can reveal.

The 26-year-old man was detained in York on Thursday by detectives from Scotland Yard’s Central e-Crime Unit, which specialises in tackling internet crime. He was released on police bail yesterday after being interviewed at a police station in North Yorkshire.

It is understood that the Metropolitan Police is pursuing the inquiry alongside FBI investigators in California, where Facebook has its headquarters.

Facebook is the world’s largest social networking website, with more than 500 million active users.

A Facebook spokeswoman said: “While no user data was compromised, we have been working closely with Scotland Yard and the FBI as we take every attempt to hack our internal systems extremely seriously. However, we have no further comment as this is an ongoing criminal investigation.”
