The officers chose not to issue a discretionary on-the-spot fine but the two men were asked to return home and escorted back to the motorway.

They Tweeted: "We wish to thank 99 per cent of the public for complying with guidelines at this difficult time. However, two Yorkshire chaps chose to head to Windermere for a spot of canoeing. Stopped and escorted back to the motorway. Advice will lead to enforcement if not heeded."

The Lake District is one of several National Parks across the country which has banned visitors and is urging people to stay away over the Easter weekend.

The Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors National Park authorities have closed toilets, car parks and visitor centres to deter motorists from arriving. Many caravan and campsites are shut, as are hotels and guesthouses, although there have been concerns that self-catering holiday lets may still be occupied.

Police in the Dales caught families from Leeds, Bradford and even Oldham visiting beauty spot Malham Cove earlier this week, while a man driving from Darlington to visit Aysgarth Falls to exercise was told to turn back at an army road block near Catterick. A couple from Liverpool walking their dogs in the Dales were also spoken to by officers.
