Speaking outside court, Detective Superintendent Sukhbir Singh said: "It will be totally inappropriate to link him with any other disappearances at this stage because there is no direct evidence to link him."

But the detective said that now his team had secured successful convictions, detectives would be concentrating on this question.

He said West Yorkshire Police had already been in contact with other forces including the Met and South Yorkshire.

But asked whether he believed Griffiths killed anyone else, Mr Singh said: "No, I don't."

In a statement, he said: "I am extremely pleased that Griffiths has been convicted of what can only be described as a series of horrifying crimes.

"He is a heartless and controlling man who took advantage of vulnerable women.

"What he did can never be forgotten by the families of his victims. Suzanne, Susan and Shelley all came from families who cared for and supported their daughters."
