Crowds turn out for cycling as city is urged to consider velodrome bid

Fresh from a fifth-place finish at the British road race championships at the weekend, Scott Thwaites was aiming to make it three wins in five years at the Otley Grand Prix.

The 25-year-old from Burley-in-Wharfedale won his local race in 2011 and 2012. Sheffield’s Adam Blythe won last year’s version and was back to defend his title in the 30th anniversary of the race.

The event came as councillors in Leeds are set to discuss an ambitious call for the construction of an Olympic-standard velodrome.

Coun Brian Cleasby (Lib Dem, Horsforth) has floated the idea for a scheme he says would be the perfect way of capitalising on the huge success of the Tour de France Grand Départ and Tour de Yorkshire.

He wants council officers to start investigating funding opportunities as well as looking at potential sites across the entire Leeds City Region for the indoor cycling centre.
