Crowds welcome cricket stars of past and present at Yorkshire club fun day

ENGLAND cricket stars of past and present thrilled hundreds of people when they turned up for a fun day at a club in Halifax yesterday.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan and current England all-rounder and Yorkshire player Tim Bresnan made it a day to remember for members of Copley Cricket Club.

The club has been named as the Yorkshire Showcase Club – out of 330 clubs – under the NatWest CricketForce initiative and as such, was rewarded with the appearance of some of this country’s biggest stars.

Under the English Cricket Board’s Chance to Shine scheme, the club also provides coaching to a long list of partner schools in Calderdale and continues to hold school cricket festivals each year.

It is now also heavily involved in developing girls cricket and is committed to starting a girls team in the near future.

So it was fitting that English cricketers Katherine Brunt and Jenny Gunn also joined in the fun laid on, such as welly wanging, the inevitable bouncy castles and some light cricket coaching.

A senior Calderdale councillor paid tribute to the club’s efforts to develop closer links with the community. Coun Pauline Nash said: “The work that the club is doing has been recognised by the English Cricket Board and by the community it represents.”
