Crowning glory for devoted royalists

MASSIVE crowds turned out to give the Queen a right Royal welcome to Leeds yesterday.

Raymond Wilby, 65, of Morley, joined the throng of tourists and residents to greet the Royal couple, admitting he was becoming something of a veteran at Royal occasions.

“This is the fourth time we have seen her over the years but it doesn’t get old,” he said. “Thousands of people turning up to greet the Queen has made the atmosphere extremely special.”

Binder Virdee, 43, of Roundhay, made sure of a spot so she could share the special occasion with her daughter. “I came here with my daughter Anikka, who is four. She was excited with the Diamond Jubilee and the Olympics so I brought her down here at about 10.30am. It was great and she loved it.”

And Donald Smith, 72, of Brighouse, said: “I’m a royalist and often meet Prince Charles through the Princes Trust, which I’m part of. I’ve loved today, it’s definitely been a great day out and I’m glad I came. I had a great view of Her Majesty and the Duke. I got here quite early but I’m glad I did to have such a wonderful view of the events. ”

Jennifer Wilby, 65, of Morley, said: “We had a great view when the cars came past. We looked in straight through the open window and could see her Majesty smiling and waving. It was nice to see people make the effort and come out to show their patriotism.”

Susan Caselli, 58, of Wakefield, said: “It was so emotional and just overwhelming. “My daughters can’t believe they’ve just seen the Queen.”

Wendy Ponting, 56, of Gloucester, said: “I think Leeds has done extremely well and can be very proud of itself. The city itself is beautiful and this has turned out to be a terrific spectacle.”
