Crypt launches 80th birthday appeal

A MAJOR appeal to mark the 80th birthday of one of the country's best known charities dealing with homelessness is launched at St George's Crypt, Leeds, today.

Staff, supporters and service-users will join in the event which heralds a year of fundraising and education to mark 80 years of service.

Martin Patterson, director of fundraising, said: "The Crypt opened on October 14 in 1930 and so we gather exactly 80 years to the day.

"It marks a major milestone and we will be honouring the past whilst, in these challenging times, hopefully securing the future.

"The Crypt is seeking, through the campaign, to raise 80,000. More important, is the taking part in our special year right across the city and country from all sectors of the community – churches, schools, businesses, public bodies, youth organisations, private individuals."

Chris Fields, chief executive of the Crypt, said: "This is a really special year for us. We really want through the 80 campaign to bring together as many people and organisations across our great city in support of one of the city's oldest charities.''
