PLANNING permission has been granted for an old cutlery works in West Street, Sheffield, to be transformed into a new development with independent shops, a restaurant, art gallery and library.

The Hutton's Buildings is now occupied by food and drink outlets including the Lava Lounge bar and tapas restaurant La Mancha, as well as Ben's Centre, a drop-in facility for street drinkers.

At a planning committee meeting on Monday consent was granted for 1,373 square metres of new shops run by independent traders to open up on the first and second floors of the building.

A new restaurant has got permission to open on the ground floor and the third and fourth floors could now house a training centre, nursery, art gallery, library, day centre and gym.

Only two objections had been received to the proposed scheme, which was recommended for approval by planning officers.
