Cycle scheme seeks volunteer leaders

VOLUNTEERS are wanted to help North Yorkshire residents get pedalling.

Richmondshire and Hambleton District Councils have launched the appeal for volunteer guides to take groups out on bike tours across the area.

The initiative has already seen groups set up in Thirsk and Hawes where 14 people regularly take part in guided rides and it is hoped to build on that success.

Lesley Williams, Active for Life officer for both councils, said: "We are looking for confident cyclists who can become volunteer leaders for this successful scheme.

"A volunteer simply needs to enjoy meeting new people and passing on cycling skills to those feeling nervous on a bike

"They would be helping people increase their activity levels and improve their fitness in an enjoyable activity."

The bike tours have received the backing of the CTC, Britain's national cyclists' organisation.
