Cyclist killed by car being pursued by police officers in Bingley

A cyclist has died after a car involved in a police chase knocked him from his bike in Bingley last night.

Officers from West Yorkshire Police were patrolling the area when they witnessed the driver of a silver Vauxhall Vectra behaving suspiciously in Cottingley Cliffe Road just before 7.35pm.

The officers attempted to stop the Vauxhall but it made off at speed and hit a 55-year-old male cyclist nearby. The cyclist died at the scene.

The driver of the Vauxhall, a 22-year-old man, has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and remains in police custody.

Road closures are in place on Cottingley Cliffe Road at the junction of High Bank Lane and are likely to remain in place for the rest of the day.

Police are working with the Independent Police Complaints Commission to establish the full circumstances of the collision and the moments prior to it.
