D-Day remembered

Second World War veterans re-dedicated a memorial stone in York yesterday as they prepare for a return to Normandy to mark the D-Day landings.

A 39-strong party, including widows, spouses and carers, will set off for France tomorrow to return to the beaches where the veterans fought 66 years ago to mark Sunday's anniversary of the landings.

During the five-day trip, the veterans will also attend commemorative events at Bayeux Cathedral and the Bayeux War Cemetery, the final resting place for 3,935 British troops.

The York branch of the Normandy Veterans Association is using a grant of more than 16,000 from the Big Lottery Fund to help pay for their travel costs.

Members from the group, which is made up mostly of veterans from the York area but also from Skipton, Leeds, Scarborough and Selby, re-dedicated the memorial in the city's Museum Gardens yesterday.
