Although the announcement has been kept strictly under wraps, there has been speculation Londonderry may pip its rivals to the post.

Those involved in Sheffield's bid insist all four of the final cities have strong reasons to believe that they will be celebrating when the winner is revealed during the BBC's One Show tonight.

Coun Paul Scriven, leader of Sheffield City Council, said: "Clearly if we win, the city will see an unprecedented uplift in tourism, investment and jobs. Either way, the bidding process has left us with a clear plan for arts and culture for the coming years; has generated significant national profile for the city and has been built on the largest consultation on arts and culture that the city has ever seen."

An audience of invited guests will gather at the Winter Gardens tonight for the live announcement.
