Dales cabbies may face 'Knowledge'

A KNOWLEDGE test which has been employed in London to ensure cabbies learn the capital's labyrinthine network of roads could be introduced in the Yorkshire Dales.

Richmondshire District Council has launched a review of its hackney carriage and private hire scheme which could see a raft of new measures introduced next year. Among the proposals which are being considered is the introduction of a "knowledge

test" which would cover the law and conditions as well as probing cabbies' familiarity of the district.

A similar test is used in London where black cab drivers need a detailed knowledge of the capital within a six-mile radius of Charing Cross.

The city's Green Badge drivers have to learn 320 routes and also need to know the landmarks and places of interest along these runs.

Richmondshire District Council is also considering introducing a dress code for cab drivers and a code of conduct, as well as a customer care course, medical tests for drivers every five years and a taxi forum.

A survey is being carried out until December 31. Copies of the draft policy are available at www.richmondshire.gov.uk/licensing.
