Dales development awards line up mix of properties for design judges

AN ECLECTIC mix of properties ranging from private houses and pubs to a domestic weaving studio and a barn have been entered into a competition to recognise the best developments across the Yorkshire Dales.

The Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority is staging the second Best Building Design Award contest after the inaugural competition was held five years ago.

Winners of the 2005 awards included Kilnsey Old Hall which won the best conversion category, while West Burton Village Hall was awarded the top spot in the best new non-residential building category.

Judges will now visit the 20 entries which have been received throughout the next month before an awards ceremony is held in the autumn.

The national park authority's deputy head of planning, Andrew McCullagh, said: "We are looking for designs that are exciting, stimulating and innovative but, at the same time, are sympathetic to the beautiful landscape of the national park.

"We have been really pleased with the variety we have received – there are some interesting and unusual schemes."

Awards will be made in six categories and several buildings have been nominated in more than one. The deadline for entries has now passed.
