Dame Joan is joined by Yorkshire MP on day at palace

The glamorous octogenarian was a vision in white at Buckingham Palace yesterday as she was made a dame by the Prince of Wales. It seemed a fitting tribute for the former star of the US soap opera, Dynasty, who has long been considered as having national treasure status and is showbusiness royalty.

Newly-dubbed Dame Joan has spent much of her career supporting a variety of good causes including the NSPCC and the Shooting Star Chase children’s hospice, and it was the 81-year-old’s charity work which earned her the honour.

She said: “It is humbling to receive this level of recognition from my Queen and country, and I am thrilled and truly grateful.”

The investiture ceremony also saw world champion athlete Steve Cram receive a CBE, while the daughter of footballer Sir Stanley Matthews, Jean Gough, became an MBE.

Yorkshire had a representative in the form of long-serving MP Hugh Bayley, who was given a knighthood.

Sir Hugh, who is stepping down from his York Central constituency in May, was recognised for his diplomatic work with NATO and international development.

Upon receiving news of the accolade, he said he was “astonished”.
