Dancing day brings culture right into town centre square

Dancers showed off their moves on Saturday in an event that was designed to turn Rotherham town centre into a giant dancefloor.

Both amateurs and professionals, adults and children took part in Imove on the Street, a day of dance which began in All Saints’ Square at 11am.

The event was part of a regional programme designed to bring cultural activities such as dance to Yorkshire in the run-up to the 2012 Olympics in London.

The day of dance included workshops for members of the public, as well as performances by the award-winning Demon Barbers and local dance groups.

Dancers from across Rotherham were invited to enter videos of their best moves on the Imove On The Street Facebook page, and the best of the bunch were then selected to perform in a live final on stage in All Saints’ Square.

Rotherham Council’s arts in health officer, Rhiannon Lister-Coburn, said the event created a fantastic atmosphere. “Dance fever has swept the borough.

“Thanks to shows like X Factor and Britain’s Got Talent, Rotherham is filled with potential dancing superstars, and what better place to showcase that talent than the town centre.

“We’ve got a new generation of people out there who love to get on stage and entertain crowds with great routines.”
