Danger-cycling crackdown backed

A WOMAN who suffered life-changing injuries when she was hit by a cyclist on a footpath has backed a police clampdown on dangerous cycling.

Jean Morton was suffered severe bruising, cuts and other injuries when she was knocked down on a path in Inglemire Lane, Hull in July 2008.

She said: “After a spell in the Hull Royal Infirmary I now have two steel rods inserted in my spine but still suffer considerable pain and now have to walk with a stick. The experience has led me to being very apprehensive about being hit again by cyclists on the pavement.”

Humberside Police has launched Operation Dynamo to improve pedestrian safety in Hull and will target people who cycle on pavements, ride without lights and ignore road signs. The force issued 1,108 on-the-spot fines, or fixed penalty notices to cyclists in the city last year.

Chief Inspector Dave Rawding, Neighbourhood Commander for Hull, said: “Mrs Morton’s experience really highlights the dangers that cyclists on pavements can pose. I would urge cyclists to take heed of police warnings and respect other people’s safety by following cycling legislation.”
