'Dark and sinister' women set to lure art fans into gallery's net

ARTWORK ranging from paintings of dark seas and stormy skies to intricate ceramic sculptures will feature in two new summer exhibitions at Sheffield's Cupola art gallery.

Nearly 20 years ago Lyn Hodnett and Hanne Westergaard held one of the first ever joint exhibitions at the gallery in Hillsborough, and have now returned with their latest work.

Ms Hodnett's "Fish and Fowl" exhibition is her fifth and described by Cupola director Karen Sherwood as having "a single, powerful and often very beautiful woman at the centre of nearly every image."

Ms Sherwood added: "Women have always played a central role in Lyn's work but these women seem more serious, more assured, more powerful and more commanding than ever."

She added: "The details used in this current body of work give a dark and slightly sinister feel to these alluring and rather sexy paintings."

To coincide with the opening of the exhibition, ceramic artist Ms Westergaard will be showcasing a collection of work.

Stoneware, sawdust and wood-fired pieces will be on display in Cupola's sculpture garden and the centrepiece is a specially commissioned water feature.

Much of the work on show in the Middlewood Road gallery is for sale. Ms Hodnett's exhibition runs until Sunday, June 27.
