Dashing feat boosts charities for elderly warm to task of helping charities

Thousands of people took to the streets of Leeds to raise funds to help the elderly.

The Leeds Abbey Dash, which is now in its 26th year, saw people pull on their running shoes to boost funds for Age UK, which combines Age Concern and Help the Aged.

Participants were given a helping hand ahead of yesterday's 10k race by Leeds model Nell McAndrew who led them in a warm up before they hit the ground running.

Among the projects which will benefit from money raised by the Leeds Abbey Dash is the Leeds HandyVan service.

The service helps older people feel safe and allows them to stay in their own homes by carrying out repairs and adaptations.

The fundraiser also sponsors the Leeds Meals at Home service, which ensures that vulnerable older people can receive a hot, nourishing meal in their own homes.

Older people are increasingly relying on the vital service as temperatures fall.
