Date set for trial over jail murder
of child killer

Two men charged with murdering a convicted child killer at a maximum security jail will stand trial in September, a court has heard.

Gary David Smith and Lee William Newell are both accused of killing Subhan Anwar, who was found dead in February by staff at HMP Long Lartin in Worcestershire.

A post-mortem examination found the inmate, who was serving a life sentence for murdering a two-year-old girl, had suffered a broken neck.

Anwar, from Huddersfield,
was jailed at Bradford Crown Court in 2009 for killing his
partner’s daughter, Sanam Navsarka.

Smith, 47, and Newell, 44, had been due to appear via video-link at Worcester Crown Court for a plea and case management hearing yesterday.

But Judge Robert Juckes QC adjourned the plea hearing until July 5 after a fault was found with the video-link system.

A trial is scheduled to begin on September 9.
