Elaine Reardon, from Tong Street, passed away at the age of 52, following a long battle with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).

She was moved by the support and care given to her by the Marie Curie Hospice, in Bradford, and began fundraising from her bedside by selling cakes and buns to raise money for the charity. Before she died in 2013 she urged her daughter Debbie Hughes to continue her work.

Now Mrs Hughes and sister-in-law Carrie Broadbent are to take part in the Marie Curie Walk to Remember in Temple Newsam Park, in Leeds, this weekend.

Mrs Hughes, 32, of Idle, said: “When my mum was in the hospice nothing was too much for them to do for us.

“I thought the work they did was amazing. I will always be truly thankful to Marie Curie for the support they give to my family at a very difficult time. When I think about how much we were helped as a family, I want to keep that going for others.

“When it comes to a time you really need someone, you really can rely on Marie Curie, not just for the person but for their whole family. I don’t think people realise what they do until they are in that situation.”

Her mother had attended the hospice’s Better Breathe Group and then became an inpatient before returning home. The grandmother-of-three was moved back to the hospice in September 2013. The twilight walk at Temple Newsam Park will raise funds to allow Marie Curie’s nurses and hospices to continue their work.

The Marie Curie Walk to Remember is part of a national series of 10k walks and celebrations at 17 venues across the UK this summer.

After the walk, which starts at 6.30pm in Saturday, fundraiser can enjoy an evening of celebrations as the sun goes down, including fireworks, a lantern display and live music.
