Dawson pitches in

ENGLAND footballer Michael Dawson returned to his roots yesterday, opening a new all-weather pitch at his old school in the Yorkshire Dales.

The Tottenham central defender, whose brother Andy plays for Hull City, cut the ribbon on the £150,000 facility at The Wensleydale School and Sixth Form, in Leyburn.

He was joined by Olympic Thai Boxer, Rachel Mackenzie, who spent the day working with sixth-form students from the school.

The Dawsons both started their careers with Northallerton Town FC. The new pitch has been in the pipeline for a decade with years of unsuccessful grant applications to Sport England.

It will be suitable for football, hockey and netball, and is floodlit for night-time community use.
