Day of medieval activities marks anniversary of major battle

The Battle of Wakefield took place more than half a millennium ago – and yesterday Sandal Castle hosted a free day of medieval activities to celebrate its 550th anniversary.

Visitors to the historic castle on were able to witness a theatrical display based on the battle in the grounds of Sandal's castle, and spectacular birds of prey swooped above in the sky as part of a thrilling falconry display.

For those who like to get physically involved, there was the chance to prove throwing skills in a game of quoits – a medieval version of hoopla, or engage in a friendly battle of their own with a tournament of battledore – a historical form of badminton.

Children were able to be knights for a day in a fun fight of junior jousting, featuring costumes and lances just like the ones which were worn by medieval men.

Knights in shining armour were on hand for any history enthusiasts to talk to about the real-life weapons and tools from the War of the Roses era which were on display at the fun day.

Coun David Dagger, Wakefield Council's Cabinet member for Culture, said: "We are very proud of Wakefield's significance and heritage in the War of the Roses, and this educational day was a great way for children, families and local residents to learn more about the district's history.''
