The Archdeacon of Bradford (the Venerable S. E. Lowe), who was elected president at the annual meeting of Guiseley Cricket Club last night, criticised the the MCC on “bodyline bowling.”

“It is a batsman’s job,” he said, “to take care of himself and to get out of the way if he is afraid of being hit.

“When I used io play cricket we did not scream when a ball came bouncing over our heads, we were only too thankful if we could duck out of the way.

“I think the game is being spoiled, and I would like to see a fresh MCC in control. It seems a shame to me that such fine players as Jardine. Larwood and Voce should have to go through the racket.

“There is no doubt; whatever mv mind that the Australians would never have taken back the Ashes if we had had Jardine, Larwood and Voce on the England side.”

Mr Fred Popplewell, a member on the Yorkshire County Club Committee who was elected a vice-president, said it was disgraceful that in a town with a population of over 5,000 the subscriptions to the club should only amount to £35 and the gate receipts to £17.
