Hiring fairs

The Long Preston annual hiring fair for farm servants was held yesterday. Boys obtained £12 to £18 for the year; known and tried men, £30 to £38; and females, £20 to £28.

The first of the Border March hirings was held Hawick yesterday. There was a large attendance of farmers and farm servants, and many engagements were entered.

There was amoderate demand for hinds with workers, who were engaged at 18s to 20s per week, with £1 for harvest meat &c. There were several inquiries after women workers, but there were not many forward, and where engagements were made the wages were 10s per week for the winter, and 11s for the summer.

There was a strong demand for demand for young lads, many of whom were engaged at £9 to £10, and in some cases £10 10s to £13 for the half-year, with board. Lambing men were engaged at £6 to £7 per month, with board.

The labourers in the associated shipyards of the North East Coast have accepted an advance of five per cent on piece rates, and similar advances on time.
