Advantages of training in domestic work

February 10, 1927

Miss Juniper, head of the Yorkshire Training College of Housecraft, Leeds, spoke at the prize distribution at Dewsbury Home Making School yesterday, and stressed the importance of girls receiving a thorough training in home duties.

“All girls should receive thorough and efficient training in home making,” she declared, “and many should follow it as a profession, rather than into factories, shops, and offices. Why should we not have home assistants as well as shop assistants? Certainly young mothers need such assistance in their homes, and home activities are more varied, healthy, and pleasant than work in shops and factories.”

Miss Juniper added that if men worked in their homes more, there would soon be many changes, for men were prepared to instal the latest labour-saving devices at their works and offices, but were not always ready to pay for labour-saving devices at home. If they had do the work they would probably be more sympathetic.
