On this day in Yorkshire

Yorkshire prisoners of war

February 1, 1943

Pte. George Ellis (25), Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, previously reported missing in North Africa, has sent a Christmas and New Year greeting to his wife in Harold Street, Burley.

The message, which was collected by a Pope’s visitor to prisoner of war camps, comes from Italy, and is the first intimation Mrs Ellis has had that her husband is a prisoner. He formerly worked at John Barren and Son, Chorley Lane.

A similar message from the Vatican War Department reached the Evening Post today from Pte. Thomas James Edwards on behalf of “Boys of Leeds.” L/Cpl. H. (Bert) Rigby (30), Coldstream Guards, previously reported missing in December, is now a prisoner of war in Italian hands. His wife lives in Industrial Street, Beckett Street, Leeds.

On the third birthday of their child, Mrs Morgan, Spibey Lane, Rothwell, received news that her husband, Gnr. Jack Morgan (25), RA, was a prisoner in Japanese hands in Malaya. He had been posted missing 12 months.

Another prisoner in Malaya is Gnr. Walter White, RA whose wife lives in Stanley Hall Gardens, Aberford Road. Wakefield.
