At the Ripon City Court yesterday - before the Mayor (Alderman Baynes), Messrs W. Wells, and J. Kearsley - Joseph Hornby, of Queen Street, a labourer, was summoned for snowballing the Salvation Army.

Thomas Dawson, a “Captain” in the Army, said that on Sunday afternoon while passing along Allhallowgate they were attacked by a mob of some 200 persons who were snowballing. He distinctly saw the defendant throw several times.

Th defendant denied the offence, and stated that he was returning from a Bible class, and took no part in the snowballing.

The army has for some time been pelted with snow and mud, and Superintendent Metcalfe stated that if the proceedings were not stopped ruffianism would become rampant.

Mr Wells said he considered the army provoked assaults by their dancing and gestures, and some of their proceedings were disgraceful

The Bench ordered defendant to pay 9s, including costs.

Charles Hawkins, of Allhallowgate, was also charged with snowballing the army near the Cathedral on Sunday afternoon. The Bench imposed fine and costs amounting to 8s 6d.
