Dazzling display of spring flowers cheers Chatsworth

PRIZE-winning spring flowers are now in bloom at Chatsworth, home of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire.

Visitors to the estate’s vast gardens can enjoy the flash of colour provided by hundreds of camellias that have been put on display in the newly-opened display glasshouse and the 1st Duke’s Greenhouse.

The garden team at Chatsworth is also celebrating after the flowers came away with 33 awards, including 12 firsts, from the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) London Orchid and Botanical Art Show in London last month.

Steve Porter, acting head of gardens and domain at the estate, said: “We know we have a great display of camellias every spring but it is a real achievement for the team to have that recognised at this national show.

“We still have a fantastic display here at Chatsworth so anyone can come along to see these special blooms up close.”

More than 240 camellias were picked and packed into moss-lined boxes for the trip to London for the RHS show, which Chatsworth has been entering for more than 50 years.

Other highlights in the garden over the spring season are daffodils along the arboretum walk, flowering currants, tulips and peach and apricot blossom.

A Chatsworth spokesman added: “Visitors can also now look through to the tropical area of the display glasshouse to catch a sight of botanical wonders such as the Cavendish banana and Victoria Amazonica waterlily.”

The house, garden, farmyard and adventure playground at Chatsworth are now open every day up until December 23.
