Dead soldier's farewell

IT was the letter Tiffany Lound never wanted to open – but when her soldier boyfriend was killed by a roadside bomb in Afghanistan she had to read the poignant note he left behind.

James Leverett told his pregnant 18-year-old sweetheart not to open the envelope unless he died. The 20-year-old, who flew out to Helmand province six weeks ago, told her: "Don't cry, just put all your energy into bringing up our baby".

Doctors originally told the teenager she was expecting a baby girl, but her boyfriend refused to believe the news and instead put a 50 bet on the fact that she would have a son.

Miss Lound found out their child, due next month, was to be a boy the day after his father died.
