Deal reached over historic cobbles

The £2.5m upgrade of an East Riding marketplace will include some of the stone cobbles which are being dug up, after objections from civic society members.

Beverley Civic Society objected to the removal of the setts as part of a £2.5m facelift in Saturday Market in Beverley, saying they were part of the town’s character and history.

Coun Steve Parnaby, East Riding Council leader, said: “One of the most discussed aspects of the scheme was proposals to remove the existing cobble setts.

“Whilst there had been support for retaining the setts, there had also been a strong view, particularly from disabled users, that the setts should be removed.

“After further discussions during the public consultation, it has been agreed that some of the setts will be retained for reuse at the entrance of Old Waste, the ends of the parking areas in the centre of Saturday Market and an area off Ladygate.”

Plans for the historic market include repaving the area, reducing the number of parking spaces, widening pavements and creating a pedestrian area around the Market Cross.

Work on the project is scheduled due to start in January.
