Deal will clear way for works to save chapel

THE next step towards the development of the Square Chapel in Halifax looks set to go ahead.

It is proposed to build a new annexe to the famous chapel which will provide a caf bar, a second auditorium, a box office, toilets and a volunteer room.

The proposed new annexe would be built at Blackledge on land between Square Chapel and the Piece Hall. A link could be provided from the Piece Hall through to Square Chapel via the striking new building.

But in order that the extension can be built, the council needs to agree the transfer of land on a leasehold basis to Square Chapel. Members of Council's Cabinet will discuss the proposal when they meet on Monday.

Members will also be asked to delegate key officers and elected members to complete a development agreement, and a 125-year ground lease.

Calderdale Council's leader, Coun Janet Battye, says a decision is needed to enable the project to move forward.

She said: "Transferring the land to the Square Chapel would mean that they are able to go ahead with the project. The importance of this is that it is part of building up the quality of Halifax town centre. It will also give Square Chapel more space so it can develop its work.''

The Square Chapel is claimed to be one of the most remarkable buildings in West Yorkshire and the only remaining square church in Britain.

It was designed by Thomas Bradley and built in 1772. Unbelievably for a building of such historic and architectural importance, it was allowed to fall into a sad state of disrepair.

Home at various times to Sunday Schools, scout groups, football teams and its own orchestra, it was at one time threatened with demolition.

Last year the Yorkshire Post reported that plans were afoot for a 4m development.

The ambitious scheme would transform the 18th century Grade 2* listed building by linking it to the Piece Hall via a copper and glass atrium.

A new 100-seat theatre, public sun terrace and continental cafe-bar with art gallery would also be created with a huge triangular foyer linking two performance spaces.

The hope was that work would start by the end of this year.
