Dean calls for contributions to organ-restoration fund

THE Dean of Ripon Cathedral has drawn up his Christmas list early this year, asking supporters for £150,000 to complete a major overhaul of its historic organ by the end of December.

Around 150,000 has already been raised over the past 12 months to help to repair the 3,400 pipe organ which was installed in the cathedral in 1878.

But it is urgently needed to raise the same amount again if the restoration work is to be completed. The Dean, Keith Jukes, said: "It is quite major work, we are dismantling all the pipes and individually cleaning them as well as checking all the inner mechanisms.

"So far, with the help of local businesses, individuals and fundraising events, we have raised just over 150,000.

"And the best Christmas present that I could receive would be to reach the appeal target by the end of December."

The organ was originally installed in the cathedral in a case designed by the legendary Victorian architect Gilbert Scott and the instrument has undergone extensive improvements over the centuries.

It has also been found to contain several pipes from a previous organ which was put in place in the cathedral during the 18th century.

The cathedral is hosting a fund-raising day on Saturday November 27.
