a man’s body was found inside a chimney at a city law firm by builders following staff reporting a bad smell.

An inquest opened yesterday into the death of Kevin Gough, 42, who was discovered at Moody & Woolley Solicitors in St Mary’s Gate, Derby, at around noon on Wednesday.

It was reported his body could have been there for up to a month, and he was identified by his fingerprints.

Asked to comment on the possibility the victim could have been a burglar, a spokeswoman for Derbyshire Police said officers were treating the death as unexplained.

“We’re leaving it to the
coroner to decide what he was doing in the chimney,” she added.

Police were sent to the city centre premises on Wednesday and cordoned off the area while the body of Mr Gough, of no fixed abode, was removed.

The spokeswoman added: “Police are not treating his death as suspicious.”
