Debate on future look of city square

A CITY centre square in York is set to be revamped if councillors approve plans for the scheme costing almost £500,000.

Council officers are recommending members back a proposal which will see about £490,000 invested in Kings Square from the Reinvigorate York initiative budget. It is hoped the changes will make Kings Square easier for pedestrians to access, provide extra seating and a possible cafe on the edge of the square and space for performers.

Almost 200 people responded to a recent consultation on plans to enhance the public space – which will see the whole square repaved and the central raised area remodelled.

The chairman of Reinvigorate York, Sir Ron Cooke, said: “The quality of York’s inner city public spaces are fundamental to sustaining the city’s present and future prosperity.”

Members of the council’s cabinet will meet on Tuesday next week to discuss options for the square’s transformation.
