Decision day for new burial site

PLANS for a new cemetery in Huddersfield will come before a planning committee at the end of this month.

Kirklees Council wants to develop a site at Hey Lane, near Castle Hill, because other burial grounds are running out of space.

The plans have run into opposition from locals who claim the nine-acre site is too remote and not suitable.

A council spokesman said the plans would be considered by the Huddersfield area planning sub-committee on January 26.

“The proposed site at Hey Lane meets all the requirements of being large enough to justify the investment needed to bring it into use as well as its accessibility, size and potential for future growth,” said the spokesman.

“The positioning of the entrance has been designed to give maximum sight lines of traffic approaching in either direction and on-site car parking will mean that parking on the road is unlikely. Footpaths at the front of the site will be improved.”

She said the site was on a bus route and there would be secure cycle parking.

The cost of developing the facility has been estimated at £846,000.
