Degree of success for golden girl Jessica Ennis

HEPTATHLETE Jessica Ennis has been awarded an honorary degree in her home city of Sheffield.

The 23-year-old world champion was given the LittD degree from the city's university, where in 2007 she also completed a degree in psychology, in recognition of her sporting talents.

The new qualification means Ennis, who won gold in the World Athletics Championships in Berlin in August, is now also a doctor of literature.

Wearing the university's traditional red graduation robe with green trim, Ennis took to the stage at the university's Octagon Centre in Sheffield to accept her honorary degree.

Alongside Ennis, Barry Hines, who is best known as the author of A Kestrel For A Knave, also became a Doctor of Letters in recognition of literary talents.

They both joined graduating students from a variety of departments who were also attending ceremonies to collect degree certificates awarded from the university.

Professor Keith Burnett, vice-chancellor of the University of Sheffield, said: "The university is delighted to award honorary degrees to people who have made such a significant contribution to their field.

"We are privileged that these national and eminent figures are coming to the university to accept their Honorary Doctorates as they are excellent role models to our students."

Professor Dominic Shellard, pro-vice-chancellor, spoke at Ennis's ceremony and praised her "dedication and drive for perfection".

He said: "Her popularity is down to her prodigious talent, character and modesty.

"Jessica is a supremely gifted athlete and wonderful ambassador for her home city."

He also quoted Lord (Seb) Coe, who said she is "forged mentally in the steel of her home city".
