The Royal Voluntary Service’s (RVS) Dementia Support Good Neighbours Service offers home visits to older people to help with daily tasks such as getting shopping, walking the dog, or just a cup of tea and a chat.

The service aims to help older people to live an independent life in their own home, while providing friendly, social interaction to make sure they’re safe and well. It will now be able to expand and hopes to help at least 120 older people this year after being given the funding by the People’s Postcode Lottery.

RVS dementia support manager Jan Burrows said: “The Dementia Support Service provides a lifeline for many vulnerable older residents living with Dementia in Doncaster. This funding will allow is to grow our service and ensure that no older person and their families are left struggling on their own.

“No two people with Dementia are the same so we tailor our support package to fit the individual needs of the older person so they can carry on living in their own home and have a more active life in the community.”

The Head of Charities at People’s Postcode Lottery, Clara Govier, said: “There is just no need for so many older people in this country to be so chronically lonely when the solution is often as simple as a cup of tea and a chat. It is heartbreaking to think that’s all it would take to change someone’s day, or life, and yet so many people don’t even have that to look forward to. ”
