Conservationists are mourning the loss of a former Victorian hospital once regarded as one of Hull's most attractive buildings.
Demolition contractors have moved in on former Hedon Road Maternity Hospital, which closed at the end of March when maternity services were transferred to the new Women and Children's Hospital at Hull Royal Infirmary.
In one six-day period in June there were 14 serious blazes and many of the once graceful buildings were burnt-out with roofs caved-in.
Hull Civic Society had tried to get the buildings listed but the Government refused following advice from English Heritage. The society continued to maintain that the site could have been reused.
